Drive
to Thimphu is very scenic, hills and the road wanders along the
river. Thimphu is the capital city of Bhutan and the home of the
legislative assembly for the country and also the Dzong for the
province of Thimphu. A very pleasant city of 120,000 persons which
has the feel of a rural town rather than a city. Had a very good
Bhutanese lunch. In the morning went to visit the traditional
painting school where student spend up to 6 years learning their
trade. Seen some absolutely wonderful art and embroidery done silk on
silk. Then off to a hand made paper factory, where the make paper
from Daphne bark.
Very labour
intensive, but the end result is very nice. Then a short drive
around as we have to wait to leave as the road to Punakha is closed
at certain times as they are widening the road . So a slow drive up to
the top of the pass at 3115M and the 108 stupas at the top
. We now had to wait for about 40 minutes to begin the
trip down the mountain to Punakha . The road hugs the mountain and
winds back and forth and around the hills until you finally arrive in
a wide valley in which the Ouma Tsang Chhu runs. The valley is
semi-tropical and they can grow two crops of some grains a year.
Tomorrow will go and explore the valley and several temples.
